Once a global leader in kiwi production, Italy has faced serious challenges in recent years due to the spread of a destructive root disease known as moria. This virus attacks the roots, leading to decay and eventually the death of the plants, leaving vast orchards barren across the country.
But there are signs of revival. Kevin Au Yeung, Asian Market Director at RK Grower, reflects on the transformation witnessed during Kikokà’s Open Day event held in Latina, Italy, last October. “This field, once devastated by moria, has come back to life thanks to innovative agricultural practices,” he explains. The turnaround involved removing the infected green Hayward kiwi plants and grafting Kikokà yellow kiwi shoots onto the resilient Bounty rootstock. “Today, the orchard is thriving again, packed with healthy, vibrant fruit. Growers are impressed by the size, shape and consistency of this new variety, which is bringing fresh optimism to the Italian kiwi industry.”
Kikokà’s project introduces two yellow-fleshed kiwi varieties set to reshape Italy’s production landscape. With output expected to grow from 2,000 to 15,000 tonnes by 2026, the momentum is drawing attention from producers, importers and retailers around the world. Kikokà kiwis are especially valued for their standout flavour, smooth texture and long market window, from October through May,meeting high demand across both European and global markets.
“The global appetite for yellow kiwi continues to grow,” says Kevin. “In Europe, the late-season Kikokà variety is in particularly high demand, offering retailers reliable supply deep into spring. In Asia, volumes are still limited this year, but the potential is huge. We’re currently running pilot programs in select markets to gather feedback for future expansion. The late Kikokà variety shows great promise, especially for the January–April window.”
Despite the dual pressures of disease and climate change, Italy’s kiwi sector is proving resilient. With innovation at the core and next-gen varieties like Kikokà leading the way, growers are building a more sustainable and competitive future. Kikokà stands as a symbol of that progress, offering premium fruit with global appeal.
